If you’re like me, you’ve been to your local grocer several times in the last few months hoping that eggs would be in stock… But they haven’t been.
That’s because Australia is in the midst of an egg shortage.
Why is there currently an egg shortage?
In early 2024, there were outbreaks of avian influenza – more commonly known as bird flu – in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.
According to the ABC, this led to the culling of 1.8 million chickens. And that subsequently led to major disruptions in egg supply chains…

As an ultimate result, there has been a nationwide egg shortage since June of this year.
What is the Woolies egg limit?
Currently, Woolworths has a limit of two egg cartons per customer in Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania.
What are Aldi egg limits?
Aldi currently does not have any egg limits.
What is the egg limit at Coles?
Currently, Coles has a limit of two egg cartons per customer in every state and territory except Western Australia.
What can I use instead of eggs?
It definitely depends on what you’re making, but eggs can be substituted.
Applesauce, mashed banana, ground flaxseeds, yoghurt, buttermilk, nut butter, sweetened condensed milk and baking soda mixed with vinegar work quite well in various recipes as egg substitutes.

When will the egg shortage end?
It’s not yet clear when the egg shortage in Australia will end.
However, managing director of not-for-profit company Australian Eggs Rowan McMonnies did tell the ABC that the shortage should hopefully ease soon – especially as egg production usually increases in spring.
“This disruption is ongoing across the winter and we are very much looking forward to the spring period,” Mr McMonnies said.
“We’re hoping through that natural dynamic of the birds being outside, the sun shining, we do see an increase in production and we’re looking for that relief on shelf,” he continued.
